ON JUNE 19TH, 1865, TWO AND A HALF YEARS AFTER THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION WAS SIGNED, SOME 250,000 ENSLAVED PEOPLE IN GALVESTON, TEXAS DID NOT KNOW THEY HAD THEIR FREEDOM UNTIL UNION SOLDIERS CAME TO THE CITY AND TOLD THEM SO. JUNETEENTH IS THE CELEBRATION OF THE COMPLETION OF THE 1863 PROCLAMATION FREEING ALL ENSLAVED PEOPLES IN THE UNITED STATES.
